Austrian Year of Memorial 2018
On the occasion of the hundredth anniversary of the end of the First World War, on Thursday, 13 september 2018, the Pan-European Working Group of the EPP Group held a panel at the European Parliament in Strasbourg.
The lecturer Stephan Roth from the Documentation Archive of Austrian Resistance delivered a speech on "The Austrian Year of Memorial 2018".
In his speech, Stephan Roth pointed out that this year Austria commits the commemorative year 2018. Especially on the so called “Anschluss” of Austria to Hitler’s Germany should be dunning remembered. Through this event, and in the years that followed, Austrians were guilty and involved in the most terrible crime in history.
Numerous sections of Austrian’s society - such as religious communities, politics, civil society, education, the media, business and science - participate in the activities of the commemoration year, which represents an important milestone in dealing with the past, in the overall social commitment to human dignity and freedom and in the understanding of the important principle “Never forget! Never again!”
For decades, the work of the Documentation Archive of Austrian Resistance (DÖW) has been an indispensable component of historical work, dealing with the past, commemorative culture and education for the future in Austria.
