Presidential Elections in the United States

On the occasion of the presidential elections in the United States of America, which took place on 5 November 2024, President Alain Terrenoire and Secretary General Pavo Barišić sent a message to the members of the Pan-European Union.

In their message, they emphasised the democratic act that expressed the will of the American people and pointed out some of the consequences of this election for both Europe and the entire world.

The election success of Donald Trump as President of the United States forces Europe to take a realistic view of the far-reaching political changes that will accompany it and to draw all the consequences.

As early as 1923, Richard Coudenhove-Kalergi wrote in the foreword to Paneuropa: ‘Europe, which has almost lost its self-confidence, expects help from outside: some from Russia, others from America. These two hopes are putting Europe in mortal danger. Neither the West nor the East wants to save Europe: Russia wants to conquer it, America wants to buy it.’

To counter these changes, the Pan-European Union must, true to the aims of its founder, pave the way for a Europe as an independent and sovereign power in all areas.

The European Union should immediately put its armed forces on the side of the Ukrainian resistance and increase its military support for the liberation of the territories illegally occupied by Russia. At the same time, the accession process of all South-East European candidate countries as well as Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia - if the latter applies for membership - must be accelerated within a clearly defined geopolitical framework.

The election of Donald Trump by the American people is a further indication of the end of multilateralism and the return to an era of bitter power confrontations.

President Terrenoire and Secretary General Barišić concluded by recalling that it is the task of Pan-Europeans to pave the way for European strength and unity.
